We are not building on lessons learned in the HIV response to combat the COVID-19 pandemic
ABSTRACT
The AIDS 2022 conference created a platform for people to come together and talk about lessons learned from the HIV response and how it was translated to combat COVID-19 and prepare for future pandemics. Many people at the conference felt that the world failed to translate gains made in HIV response into the global COVID-19 response. Moreover, there were those of the view that the world seems to keep reinventing the wheel by establishing new institutions for pandemic preparedness rather than using the already existing tried and tested mechanisms.
Progress in addressing HIV is “In Danger”
ABSTRACT
UNAIDS’ Global AIDS Update 2022 is entitled ‘In Danger’ and this title says it all. The numerous and intersecting crises that have had a global impact have also had a devastating effect on people living with and affected by HIV. The global response to the AIDS pandemic has been significantly thrown off course. How can we get it back on track given a global economic recession, war in Europe and emerging new health threats?
Special action is needed to tackle “outrageous” discrepancy between adult and child HIV
ABSTRACT
At Montreal’s Internal AIDS Conference three UN agencies (UNAIDS, UNICEF and WHO) took the opportunity of announcing the launch of a new coalition to end AIDS in children by 2030 and by doing so address one of the most glaring disparities in the current AIDS response. The Global Alliance for Ending AIDS in Children by 2030 is based on a partnership that will be active in 12 African countries during its first phase. It will be officially launched in Africa in Nigeria in October 2022.
