ABSTRACT
The South Sudan malaria grant approved in 2020 and due to start in January of this year is still waiting for the choice of a new Principal Recipient to be confirmed. In the meantime, the malaria program is operating under a no-cost extension up to June 2021. The country’s Global Fund grants have been subjected to the Additional Safeguard Policy for several grant cycles, as well as the country being designated as having a Challenging Operating Environment.
AS FOR HIV PANDEMIC, TRUCK DRIVERS AT HIGH RISK OF CONTRACTING AND TRANSMITTING COVID-19 IN EAST AFRICA
ABSTRACT
Truck drivers who transport cargo across borders in the East African Community partners are at high risk of contracting and transmitting the COVID-19. The truck drivers are also at a higher risk of HIV infection.
GLOBAL FUND HAS ALLOCATED AN ADDITIONAL $43.3 MILLION TO EXISTING GRANTS IN SEVERAL COUNTRIES FOR 'PORTFOLIO OPTIMIZATION'
ABSTRACT
The Global Fund Board has allocated $43.3 million in additional funding for portfolio optimization to several Global Fund grants, including Kosovo (HIV/AIDS), the Middle East Response (integrated), Namibia (Malaria), Nigeria (Malaria), South Sudan (Tuberculosis), and Zambia (TB/HIV).
OIG AUDIT OF GLOBAL FUND GRANTS TO SOUTH SUDAN HIGHLIGHTS THAT RISK MITIGATION "NEEDS SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT"
ABSTRACT
The Office of the Inspector General, in its second audit of Global Fund grants to South Sudan, found that grant implementation arrangements and financial management and assurance mechanisms were partially effective, while acknowledging the challenges imposed on the country by decades of political instability. The OIG also found that the identification and mitigation of risks related to service delivery, monitoring and evaluation, and procurement and supply chain need significant improvement.

ABSTRACT
Aidspan has obtained draft HIV and TB funding requests from six African countries classified by the Global Fund as challenging operating environments (Eritrea, Liberia, Guinea, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Somalia). Civil wars, famines and post-Ebola realities require flexible approaches in these countries. A number of innovative and adaptive interventions are prioritized to respond to the diseases in such difficult circumstances.

This article details the Ecobank Foundation’s renewed commitment to the Global Fund. As reported in GFO 296, at the recently concluded Global Fund replenishment conference, the Foundation committed $3 million over three years to help Fund recipients develop their financial management capacity.
