Independent research in Eastern and Southern Africa identifies opportunities to improve effectiveness of Global Fund processes

The Health Economics and HIV and AIDS Research Division of the University of Kwazulu-Natal has just published a report synthesizing findings from three country case studies from Eastern and Southern Africa, commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, as part of its work to support initiatives improving the impact of HIV programmes in the region.

ABSTRACT
As a result of a pricing agreement between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and two generic drug companies, starting in 2018 a state-of-the-art fixed dose combination ARV regimen will be available in 92 developing nations at a maximum cost of $75 per patient per year. The Global Fund was one of several organizations that worked on the agreement.

The Gates Foundation announced a new pledge of $50 million for the Fund. No other new pledges were announced during the conference. Kofi Annan has agreed, if asked, to co-chair the Global Fund's Replenishment Conference next year, and to attend the Fund's November board meeting.
