IS THERE A LEADER IN GLOBAL FUND SUPPORTED HEALTH SYSTEM STRENGTHENING?
ABSTRACT
Funding applications have systematically incorporated a health system strengthening component. Even though a strategy and tools have been developed to facilitate planning, resilient and sustainable systems for health remains a difficult subject to comprehend, especially when attempting to put it into operation for Global Fund teams and implementing countries.
MISSED 90-90-90 TARGETS CALL FOR A MULTI-PRONGED APPROACH IN LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES
ABSTRACT
Countries have collectively failed to achieve the 90-90-90 targets set by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for 2020. The targets envisioned that 90% of all people living with HIV would be aware of their HIV status, 90% of those who had tested positive would have initiated treatment, and 90% of those on treatment would have achieved viral suppression. By the end of 2019, eight out of 10 people living with HIV knew their status, 82% were on treatment, and 88% had achieved viral suppression, across the globe. Weaknesses within the health systems, including staff shortages, weak laboratory infrastructure, and limited financing, are partly to blame for the failure to achieve these targets.
GLOBAL FUND PLEDGES SWIFT RESPONSE TO ANY EBOLA-RELATED REQUESTS FROM LIBERIA, SIERRA LEONE OR GUINEA
ABSTRACT
The Global Fund will respond to requests from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to be more flexible in reprogramming grants should this be needed to support the continued response to the Ebola epidemic. The countries may ask for a greater investment in health systems strengthening, as poor infrastructure, a shortage of trained health workers and weak systems are driving the spread of the outbreak.
