Successful HIV programs need a rights-based approach to complement biomedical interventions

It is no news to those working in HIV that medical treatment alone will not succeed in addressing and halting the spread of HIV and that the right enabling environment must be in place so that biomedical activities are supported by corresponding actions in policy, legal, and social arenas. At Montreal’s International HIV Conference, the Global Fund Executive Director Peter Sands reported on the success of a Global Fund Initiative, Breaking Down Barriers, which does just that.

Although monkeypox has been around for decades, it is only recently that it has received global attention. This is because its epidemiology is changing as it moves from countries where it is endemic to previously non-endemic countries, including the United States and countries in Europe. It is also changing from animal to human transmission to human-to-human transmission and, worryingly, appears to be more prevalent among men who have sex with men.

ABSTRACT
A $40-million award to India from portfolio optimization will help India secure a $400-million loan from the World Bank, to fight tuberculosis. Loan 'buy-downs' are one of the innovative financing mechanisms that the Global Fund has been exploring as a way of increasing domestic financing and scaling up services in low- and middle-income countries. This is the Global Fund's first investment of this kind.
